Do I Need IRB Review?

You may need IRB review if your project involves:

• Living human participants
• Interviews, surveys, focus groups, or observation
• Collection of identifiable private information
• Trauma-related, mental health, or justice-involved populations
• Publication or public dissemination of findings
• External funding or grant requirements

Some activities may NOT require IRB review, such as:

• Internal quality improvement (QI) projects
• Program evaluation without research intent
• Use of fully de-identified, public datasets

Investigators may request a Pre-Review Consultation to determine whether IRB oversight is required before submitting a full protocol.
